VEHICLE OVERVIEW
1968 Shelby GT350 Convertible
description
The 1968 Shelby GT350 Convertible represents one of the most underrated and overlooked opportunities in today’s collector car market. While much of the attention over the past several years has focused on big-block Shelby models such as the GT500 and GT500KR, knowledgeable collectors have increasingly recognized the rarity, drivability, and long-term collectability of the 1968 GT350 Convertible platform.
Offered here is an exceptionally well-documented, factory-correct, matching-numbers example finished in its highly desirable Highland Green exterior, complemented by a white power convertible top and black deluxe interior. This Shelby has recently completed a comprehensive multi-thousand-dollar bumper-to-bumper mechanical and cosmetic service performed through our award-winning factory-authorized Shelby American dealership facility. The result is a beautifully sorted and highly presentable Shelby that is ready to be driven, shown, and enjoyed immediately.
Factory equipment and options include the original matching-numbers drivetrain, factory automatic transmission, factory air conditioning, power steering, power front disc brakes, tilt-away steering wheel, deluxe interior, factory tachometer and gauges, power convertible top, and original Shelby fiberglass components.
The car retains all of its original body panels and original fiberglass components, with no known rust or accident history. The restoration was completed in 1989, and remarkably, the paint remains exceptionally attractive today, presenting as a solid 8+ quality finish. Overall cosmetic presentation is highly impressive, particularly considering the age of the restoration.
Accompanying the vehicle is an extensive documentation binder that includes copies of the original factory order sheet, original window sticker, original factory invoice, original shipping documentation, original Shelby owner’s manual, copies of previous titles dating back to the 1970s, the original build sheet, and Shelby American Automobile Club (SAAC) Registry documentation. According to the accompanying records, this GT350 Convertible was originally shipped to Morristown Auto Sales in Morristown, New Jersey, in May 1968.
The 1968 model year marked a significant evolution for Shelby American automobiles. Carroll Shelby’s relationship with Ford had matured into a more production-oriented partnership, resulting in increased refinement, comfort, and broader market appeal while maintaining the aggressive styling and performance characteristics that made Shelby Mustangs legendary. By 1968, Shelby production had moved from California to the A.O. Smith facility in Michigan, where vehicles received their unique Shelby modifications after leaving Ford’s Metuchen assembly plant. The 1968 models introduced revised front and rear fiberglass treatments, sequential tail lights, integrated roll-bar styling, functional scoops, and numerous luxury-oriented features not commonly associated with earlier Shelby models.
While the GT500 and GT500KR featured big-block powerplants and have historically garnered most of the attention, the GT350 offered a significantly more balanced driving experience. Powered by Ford’s high-revving 302 cubic-inch V8, the GT350 delivers excellent drivability, improved weight distribution, easier serviceability, and a more nimble overall driving character. Today, many seasoned collectors and enthusiasts prefer the driving dynamics of the GT350 over the heavier big-block cars.
One of the most fascinating aspects of the 1968 Shelby Convertible market is its production rarity relative to the better-known GT500 models. Production totals for 1968 included just 404 GT350 Convertibles, compared to 401 GT500 Convertibles and 517 GT500KR Convertibles. Despite production numbers that are virtually identical to the GT500 Convertible and significantly lower than the GT500KR Convertible, the GT350 Convertible continues to trade at substantially lower price points in today’s market. This disparity has created what many believe to be one of the strongest value opportunities in the vintage Shelby marketplace.
Over the last several years, the collector car market has experienced a noticeable shift toward authenticity, drivability, documentation, and overall ownership experience. Buyers increasingly prioritize well-documented, properly sorted cars that can be enjoyed immediately without extensive recommissioning or restoration work. As a result, high-quality GT350 Convertibles have continued to gain traction among collectors who recognize both their rarity and usability. Examples requiring restoration or lacking proper documentation have generally remained stagnant, while properly restored, highly documented, matching-numbers examples continue to perform well and attract knowledgeable buyers.
At an offering price of $147,500, this GT350 Convertible represents what we believe to be an exceptionally compelling value in today’s Shelby marketplace. Its matching-numbers status, extensive documentation, desirable color combination, factory air conditioning, factory automatic transmission, original body panels and fiberglass, strong cosmetic presentation, recent comprehensive mechanical sorting, SAAC Registry status, and documented provenance combine to create a highly attractive ownership opportunity.
This is not simply an investment-grade Shelby Mustang—it is a highly usable, enjoyable, and increasingly difficult-to-find example of one of the rarest Shelby convertible production variants ever produced. Fully serviced, fully sorted, and extensively documented, this 1968 Shelby GT350 Convertible is ready for immediate enjoyment.
